Teachers to Ned Lamont: “A+”

Update: New Haven Independent has filed a report

Two Connecticut teachers unions formally announced key endorsements of Ned Lamont‘s candidacy for U.S. Senate today in Hartford. The CEA was first to endorse Lamont at a meeting on June 2nd, at which it was unanimously decided to support the underdog in this important election. This is especially noteworthy, as the CEA has never endorsed a candidate for U.S. Senate, according to Rosemary Coyle (President of CEA). On June 8th, the Connecticut chapter of AFT also came out to endorse the real Democrat at their executive committee meeting. With the teachers on his side, can Ned go wrong?

In the news release, Coyle said this of Lamont:

“Lamont will challenge the current administration and its priorities. …and it’s time that Connecticut had a champion for students, teachers and public education in the U.S. Senate.”

My favorite quote comes from Sharon Palmer, president of AFT Connecticut:

“A moderate enables the Republican agenda, and gives credence to the Republican agenda. We don’t need that in these times.”

The video below is somewhat lengthy, clocking in at slightly over six minutes, but I feel that these endorsements are so important and that the presidents of both CEA and AFT speak so eloquently and passionately about their decision to publicly support Ned Lamont that I feel it is absolutely necessary to cut out as little as possible.

I don’t know enough about local CT teachers’ union politics to really give an expert opinion — but this is good stuff. Go Ned!
