Another Iowan to Support the Nominee
There’s a simple question going around, something that has been asked of elected Democrats by bloggers and blogreaders because it either never occurred to regular reporters to ask it or because they’ve been too busy following Lieberman down down down. The question is this:
The first Iowan to pledge support for the nominee, to my knowledge, was Tom Vilsack. Vilsack pledged to do so while live-blogging at DailyKos about a month ago, and I wrote about it for La Resistance at the time.
This morning, I learned of another Iowan who will support Lieberman, but rules out following him into the abyss: Senator Tom Harkin.
“Sen. Lieberman is one of the nicest, most decent people I have ever served with in the U.S. Senate. I support him and wish him the very best in his re-election campaign. That said, Connecticut Democrats will choose their nominee in August and I will support that nominee.” —Sen. Tom Harkin, in a statement on the strong challenge to Sen. Joe Lieberman by Ned Lamont. Lieberman has said he may run as an independent if he loses the primary.
Let me also illuminate perhaps the most important thing that Senator Harkin says here, which is that “Connecticut Democrats will choose…”
Not bloggers. Not high-profile politicians flying in from out of state (or the ones who miss their trains). It comes down to the voters, plain and simple. Just like the question.
