Cut Imus Some Slack…
Imus Suspended For 2 Weeks
After radio host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos” on his radio show, CBS suspended him for two weeks. What do you think?

“Cut Imus some slack. The man is under immense pressure to be an asshole every single morning.”
More from The Onion here.
Meanwhile, CGG over at CTLP has some real news about Imus:
State Republican Party Chair, Chris Healy sent our a press release today calling on Connecticut Senators Joe Lieberman and Chris Dodd to to end their silence and demand that radio host Don Imus be fired from his CBS radio show.
[...]
I have to give Healy credit for making an issue out of this. Dodd announced his campaign for the Presidency on the Imus show. He should have been calling for Imus’ head before Monday morning. Saying nothing only left the door open for Dodd’s opponents in both parties to take advantage.
And via TParty, we get a sampling of the kind of thing that passes for humor on the Imus show:

I can’t believe the media is still covering this story. Isn’t there something more important out there for the news broadcasts???
On the spectrum of important events, Imus’ remarks are far more newsworthy than the death of Anna Nicole Smith and the subsequent paternity-mania.
But, there is a war on… Point taken.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that our lives are to be understood in pieces, e.g., the government, giant corporations, sports, etc.
The truth is that behind the scenes there is much more cooperation going on than we are led to believe.
Rappers, hiphoppers, etc. must be promoted and if you look closely you will see that the same people promoting them promote people like Imus, Rush, Savage and so on.
The purpose for Imus, clearly, was to demean, humiliate and trivialize a specific group. How is this different for the vast majority of U.S. History. Get a clue.

I never listened to Imus so won’t miss him. What he said was wrong but I am more afraid of Al Sharpton and Jesse jackson serving as arbiters of what is allowed on the airways. Censorship is a slippery slope and giving people the roles of who gets to decide what can be said is not good. sharpton and jackson both owe apologies to the duke lacrosse team and sharpton’s role in the brawley affair should disqualify him from any role in shaping public opinion. The NAACP gave image awards the last couple of years to R. Kelly And I. Washington and there was no public outcry. MCcarthyism and rewarding bigotry and sexism by the left is just as unatractive as when it originates on the right. Long live Mario Salvio!
