In The Beginning – Jim Himes
If you want to get caught up in a whirlwind of excitement, and have the time of your life, you absolutely have to get in on a campaign at the beginning. I can speak from experience on that, and it looks to me as though we’ve got a great opportunity to do so.
It’s like this: Chris Shays‘ days as Connecticut’s Fourth District Congressman are numbered, and he knows it. But do you know who’s challenging him in 2008? Jim Himes (pictured at left). Himes (a/k/a the next Congressman from Connecticut’s 4th) has hit the ground running with an e-mail to supporters this afternoon:
As of today, there are just under 500 days remaining until Election Day 2008. And I intend to spend every one of those days running a different type of campaign, one that focuses on person-to-person contact and real grassroots participation.
Now is the time to build the foundation of this campaign. And I’m looking to you to help build it. Become a Founding Member of our campaign today, and help us reach our goal of signing up 500 new Founding Members in the next five days:
What will you get for being a “Founding Member”? You won’t get any special access or treatment. You’ll get something much more meaningful: the opportunity and responsibility of being one of the first people to join our effort to change the direction of our country and address the real priorities of our district.

The message goes on to describe the ways in which you can become a “Founding Member” with many remarkably simple options:
- Contribute
- Sign up to volunteer
- Forward this e-mail to five people
- Tell five friends
— The only way to do this is to sign up for the e-mail list, so get to it by clicking here and inputing your e-mail address at the top of the page.
Every single one of the above will help Jim Himes scare the crap out of Chris Shays. Do your part to turn Connecticut’s 4th from red to blue.
