Wyskiewicz Wins Over Firefighters

Democratic candidate for New Britain Mayor Jim Wyskiewicz has won over the local firefighters. Rick Guinness wrote up yesterday’s firefighter fundraiser for the New Britain Herald:

Democratic mayoral challenger James Wyskiewicz delivered a rousing campaign speech to a crowd of 200 at Marchegian Hall on Sunday, where his newest and biggest fan club – New Britain Firefighters Local 992 – hosted a pasta fundraiser for him.

It was hard to tell if they were backing Wyskiewicz because they liked him or because they hate incumbent Republican Mayor Stewart – a former firefighter, fire inspector and former union vice president whom they say sold them out.

Well, I’d guess that it was probably a little bit of both. It’s tough for challengers to get their names out there in the first place, so I imagine that a lot of people showed up because of their disdain for Mayor Stewart. After a “rousing campaign speech” (I wasn’t there, so I defer to the reporter’s impressions of the speech) it’s likely that the “Stewart Detractors” in the crowd became “Wyskiewicz Supporters.”

Getting the firefighters to vote for Wyskiewicz was going to be pretty easy considering Stewart’s dismal treatment of them–but if the firefighters stand with and work for Wyskiewicz, Stewart may live to regret it.
