Where Were You in ‘92?
I ask because according to Glamour magazine, that’s the year in which the “last truly good song by the Smashing Pumpkins” came out.
In a supplement entitled “Movies Rock” that was bundled with the latest issue of Glamour, the editors list the 50 greatest soundtracks ever. Compiling and publishing lists of this sort are always a good way to generate publicity/controversy, but I think that the claim regarding Drown (the Smashing Pumpkins song included on the Singles soundtrack) is outrageous.
Don’t get me wrong, Drown is an amazing tune. Here’s a contemporary performance, from Sept. 15, 2007:
Truly good indeed, but was it the “last truly good song by the Smashing Pumpkins” or wasn’t it? Below is a list of 10 songs (linked to YouTube videos so you can hear for yourself) that are as good or better, all released after 1992:
- Mayonaise (Siamese Dream, 1993)
- Disarm (Siamese Dream, 1993)
- Thru the Eyes of Ruby (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, 1995)
- Muzzle (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, 1995)
- Shame (Adore, 1998)
- Pug (Adore, 1998)
- Wound (Machina/The Machines of God, 2000)
- Untitled (2000)
- Bring the Light (Zeitgeist, 2007)
- Superchrist (2007)
So in conclusion, Drown wasn’t the “last truly good song by the Smashing Pumpkins” as clearly demonstrated by the list above. Also, I need to stop reading my fiancé’s magazines.
I was studying abroad in Ireland during my junior year in college. What were you, like, in 1st grade or something?
5th actually.
By revealing that, I may have succeeded in making us both feel old because in ‘92, many of my current classmates were in pre-K.
The headline was a veiled reference to XR2 by M.I.A., a song lyric that just happened to work for this post.
I was starting my junior year in high school…
Yeah, why are you reading Glamour magazine? Hmmm? I think my mom found me reading that garbage when I was quite young and called the school library to ask why the hell they would allow 5th-graders to read about finding your g-spot. Lord, it’s all a bunch of recycled crap.
But I digress. I had to chime in and say with 100% agreement that Bring the Light is every bit as awesome as Drown. Due to a happy coincidence of work scheduling, I get to fly from NYC to Atlanta and see the two rescheduled shows at the Fox Theatre. I can tell you that at the top of my most-anticipated songlist is most definitely Bring the Light. Mmmm.
Next thing, you’ll be reporting from Us Weekly!
in ‘92, many of my current classmates were in pre-K.
Somehow, that just seems very wrong.

‘92…ahh, what an amazing year. A time when you could turn on the radio and ACTUALLY hear good music.
Lenny K., Fishbone, Jane’s Addiction, RHCP, 10,000 Maniacs, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Bob Marley: Legend, etc, etc.
Personally, I don’t think Drown is their best song but it’s up there.
